The place
Nobody lives here. You climb down into it. The whole islet is a shallow stone bowl stepped in rings, and the rings are the wrong size -- each one is chest-high on a cat, so the cats do not sit on them, they sit at the bottom, on five small wooden stools, around one fire, in a ring that could seat two hundred of something else. That is the single strange thing and it is never explained. What happens here is that somebody off a ship talks and everyone else does not.
